Cinebench R20 uses a modern AVX architecture, and loads the cores much better than Cinebench R15. Manually OC'ing on 2700X is really only worth it if one can do at least 4.225Ghz (or better). I tried to raise the Ghz to 4.2, but no matter how much voltage increases, it is always unstable, I honestly do not understand it. Either your friends overclock is unstable, he has horrendous RAM speed/ timings or possibly unstable RAM, or has some other setting in bios that is gimping his system.
